Here at Underdog’s Brewhouse, we believe that anyone can love and appreciate our beer, no matter their level of “beer expertise”. From the well-honed palette of a craft beer connoisseur to the untrained taste buds of an occasional imbiber, our brews are designed to be everyone’s favourite wheat beers. However, we also believe that greater consumer education can lead to a greater appreciation of everything that goes into our product. As well, the more we know about how beer works, and how it can best be enjoyed, the more we can deliver the optimal All or Nothing experience to our loyal customers. With Labour Day just around the corner, we’re heading back to the classroom. That’s right, we’re talking about Beer School!
Many of you have likely heard the term Sommelier, also known as “that guy who knows way too much about wine”. But did you know that there are also beer sommeliers? In North America, there are two programs for becoming a beer expert: Cicerone and Prud’homme. Both programs have multiple levels, and cover a broad range of topics relevant to the brewing, serving, and enjoyment of beer.
- The history of beer and brewing
- Understanding beer styles
- Proper glassware
- Food pairings
- Off flavours and defects
Our co-founders, Jeff and Eric Dornan, have both completed Level III Prud’homme, and are certified Beer Sommeliers. Our GTA Sales Rep Matt recently began Level II (Beer Specialist), consisting of 30 hours of class over a ten week period. In other words, we don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk, and we have the certificates to prove it. All of this means that we can help bar owners and staff learn the optimal way to serve our beer. We can find the most delicious foods to pair with our beer. We can help educate LCBO staff on the incredible flavours and aromas found in our brews and we can talk to you about beer for hours (seriously, hours).
Who said school couldn’t be fun?
